The next phase of progress and evolution of Formula E came one step closer as the FIA confirmed the choice of suppliers for the Gen4 race car, which is due to debut in Season 13 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in 2026/27.
While Formula E is only nine seasons old, the on-track technology is ever-evolving and has undergone revolutionary changes in that short spell. We’ve come a long way since we made our debut back in 2014.
Informed by the boundary-pushing GENBETA and the pioneering Gen3, the next evolution for Formula E is set to be GEN 3.5, which will hit the track in Seasons 11 and 12.
Activation of the front powertrain in drive and use of four-wheel drive in certain scenarios, softer compound, ultimately quicker tyres and bodywork/aero tweaks are all on the table as possibilities, with lap times projected to be several seconds faster than is currently possible with Gen3 as it stands.
Beyond that, Gen4 will bring the next major leap for the series, ensuring Formula E remains at the bleeding edge of world championship electric motorsport.
Gen4 will be a net zero race car by design, like its predecessor but the boundaries of what is possible in this space are to be pushed yet.
Chassis: Spark Racing Technology will continue to supply the chassis’ to Formula E, as it has done since our inception.
Batteries: Podium AT – an Italian company with success across a variety of motorsport projects, will step up to become an FIA World Championship single supplier for the first time.
Front powertrain: Marelli – extending the Italian brand’s longstanding working relationship with the FIA.
Tyres: Bridgestone – marking the manufacturer’s return to an FIA World Championship for the first time in a decade and a half.
Formula 1 has selected Pirelli as the exclusive tyre supplier to the World Championship and Global Tyre Partner until 2027, with an option to extend for an additional year.
The Italian manufacturer took on the role as sole supplier in 2011 and will have been in F1 for 18 seasons at the end of the latest agreement (including a possible extension).
Throughout that time, they have responded to a series of sporting and technical changes, including the request to deliver 13-inch high degradation tyres for 2011, and also wider tyres in 2017 and the introduction of the current 18-inch rubber from 2022.
Pirelli have put a sharp focus on research and development of sustainable tyre solutions as part of their support of the sustainability targets set by Formula 1. With the sport aiming to be Net Zero Carbon by 2030. From 2024, all tyres used in F1 events will be FSC-Certified (Forest Stewardship Council).
That means the FSC have confirmed the plantations of the forest-based components of the tyres are managed in a way that preserves biological diversity and brings benefits to the lives of local communities and workers while ensuring economic sustainability.
This new agreement also confirms Pirelli will provide the tyres to Formula 2 and Formula 3.
Since returning to the sport in 2011 Pirelli has been an invaluable partner, supporting Formula 1 through new generations of technology and technical regulations and delivering tyres to enable fantastic racing for our fans. The company’s commitment to quality, innovation and their deep knowledge of our sport will be vital in the coming years as we approach our new regulations in 2026 and the work Pirelli is focused on relating to sustainability, proven by the FSC certification, will ensure we continue to work together towards our shared Net Zero 2030 goal. I would also like to commend Bridgestone for their impressive proposal and engagement throughout the process. They have a proud legacy in our sport and I would like to thank them for their highly professional and passionate engagement with us.
President and CEO of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali.
We’re delighted to extend or presence in Formula 1 and its other related championships. Pirelli was there when Formula 1 was born in 1950, and with this latest renewal, the firm will now be a protagonist throughout nearly two decades of the modern Formula 1 era. Thanks to the impetus from Liberty Media and the support of the FIA, the sport is enjoying an extraordinary period of growth both in terms of audience and global expansion, increasing its following among younger generations as well. Innovation and technology are locked into Pirelli’s DNA, and Formula 1 constitutes the ultimate open air laboratory to not only try out and test new technical solutions, but also to accelerate fresh research, development, and production processes in making tyres. Our commitment to sustainability is equally strong, as proved by the FSC certification that will be introduced to our F1 tyres from next year. Being at the forefront of motorsport’s pinnacle until at least 2027 adds another important value dimension to our company.
Pirelli Executive Vice President and CEO, Marco Tronchetti Provera.
Pirelli has been operating at the top level of motor sport for many years and I am sure that they will continue to deliver innovation and excellence on the world stage. Formula 1 is a unique challenge for the tyre supplier, and Pirelli has demonstrated great commitment to producing tyres that meet the extreme demands of these incredible cars. I would like to thank Pirelli for its ongoing support of motor sport not only in Formula 1, but in many other championships and categories at every level. Work will continue in the coming years to take further strides both in terms of performance and sustainability, and Pirelli have made strong commitments to both of these targets.
It has been announced that Formula 1 will continue to race in Austria until 2027, after a new four-year agreement was reached.
The Austrian Grand Prix returned to the FIA Formula 1 World Championship in 2014, an since then the Red Bull Ring has welcomed millions of fans, with 303,000 supporters in attendance at last year’s sold-out event.
The last race under the current agreement, set to take place 30th June to 2nd July, will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Austrian Grand Prix’s return to the Formula 1 calendar, and feature an F1 Sprint for the second consecutive year.
And now fans can now look forward to at least four more Grand Prix at the historic track.
The Austrian Grand Prix brings together the perfect mix of a challenging track, high-speed racing, and a beautiful venue for our fans, so I am delighted that we will be coming back to the Red Bull Ring until at least 2027 under this new agreement. As we celebrate the 10th year since our return to Spielberg, I would like to thank everyone involved in this renewal, especially the promoter and Red Bull and I want to pay tribute to Dietrich Mateschitz for the love, passion, and vision he brought to Formula 1 that has ensured the continued success of the event and the huge enthusiasm for our sport in Austria and around the world.
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1.
We are proud of the special partnership we have with Formula 1, and we are absolutely delighted to be welcoming the top class of motorsport to the Red Bull Ring for a further four years. In signing this contract extension, Formula 1 has made a strong commitment to Austria, Styria and the Murtal region. As we enter the tenth year of our partnership with Formula 1, we want to celebrate this milestone with all the great fans of the sport and to thank them for their loyalty and the tremendous atmosphere they help to generate. Everyone is invited to experience another great race weekend at Spielberg in 2023.
