Two week shutdown

During the summer break we have a two week shutdown in F1. But why some may ask? Well within the sporting regulations it obliges all F1 teams to have two week period where their activities are restricted.

Shutdown has been apart of F1 for a while and was introduced for two specific reasons – The first is to save costs, this reduces the costs of participation in the sport. – The second is to give hard-working members of F1 teams a chance to have a break from work and recharge for the second half of the season.

As we all see every year, the seasons are getting longer and longer, with a lot more races crammed into such small margins, this is a rare and crucial opportunity to relax.

What can the teams not work on during this time?

Any work which is related to enhancing the performance on the car is not allowed. Those who design, build and run the car alongside those who control developing the car as well as suppliers are affected by the regulations.

What can they work on?

Well, the areas which are open are Marketing, Finance and Legal, these don’t directly impact car performance so therefore allowed to open.

I think that the two week shutdown is very much needed in F1, especially with the season getting longer. It gives time for the employee’s of the teams a proper rest and knowing the fact they can’t go to the teams factory makes things more relaxed! Normally the shutdown is prime time to announce driver line ups for next year! So i’m looking forward to the next few weeks…
